There are many different ways to introduce points of interestin the home without having to break the bank to do it. Some of these ideas may be staring you in the face but represent a slight shift in thinking to bring it to fruition.
Using Talavera tiles as a chief form of decoration could be something that never really occured to most of us but these hand-made decorative tiles provide you with a strong use of color that can be incorporated with other tiles. Many of these types of tiles are created with the intention of using them to form a larger decorative display.
Taking the tiles as single units and then placing them in geometric patterns with other solid or patterned tiles in between can result in some very interesting designs.
Talavera may not be something that many people are terribly aware of. The pottery comes from Mexico by way of Spain and involves the use of bold colors that have been hand-painted and used in cleverly conceived designs. Many of these tiles work best when used in clusters of four, 9 or 16 to form larger patterns. These larger clusters are very much like a large tile in themself with each successive cluster placed together to form a repeating pattern across the entire wall.
It can be easy to get a little carried away with Talavera tiles because they open up a vast realm of possibilities in the desing and decoration of a room. Try to edit yourself when choosing the tiles because too many in a room will be overwhelming and will reduce the effect that they will have on a room.
Not only are they ideal for creating patterns or murals on the wall they are also popularly used to cover table tops and as borders around mirrors or as benchtop designs.

Antique and modern storage trunks are still extremely popular today to provide valuable space to store away clothes and other personal items that are not in current use. Although furniture stores continue to bring out modern wooden trunks to put into the home for the job, the preference of many people is to seek out an antique trunk and use that piece as a means of performing a dual role.
Not only do these antique trunks provide plenty of storage, they also look wonderful in an appropriate room. Particularly in rooms that are dominated by wooden features, an old style trunk such as a steamer trunk, complete with trunk accessories such as bands or straps makes the storage trunk a centrepiece in the room.
The only problem with finding an appropriate trunk is that, due to the growing popularity of these boxes, the prices are starting to rise. To get around this problem a terrific idea is to target trunks that are particularly shabby looking. The chances are they will be sold for a song. Once you have bought one of these trunks, take it to a trunk restorer where they can bring the trunk back to a point that looks far better than it ever did. Behind the shabby appearance of many of these old trunks is a solidly constructed box made out of the most beautiful types of wood you can imagine.

A very popular type of chest that has always been sought after for many uses is the cedar hope chest. These boxes are often made from cedar on the inside and fronted with an oak finish, so when you go looking for one you might find that it is referred to as an oak cedar hope chest.
The hope chest has sort of taken the travelling trunk and domesticated it, so to speak. The name refers to the tradition of young single women who would store clothes and home furnishings in chests, ready for their marriage when they would move out of the family home. In their hope chest would be everything they need to get them started in their new life.
Like the travelling trunk, a hope chest was used as the young woman’s luggage when she left the home. These days young girls are often given a hope chest from a young age as birthday presents. Each birthday they might be given another item to store in their hope chests. At the end of the day the hope chest can be used as valuable storage or it can become a very handy decorative piece. It can also be made into the centrepiece of a room, too, perhaps as a coffee table.
However they are used, cedar hope chests are built to last and built so that whatever is stored inside them is protected.

Antique trunks have a dual role in functioning as pieces of furniture these days. They provide a place to sit and are a handy source of storage as well as being an attractive piece of furniture.
The trunks that are used as decorative storage units in bathrooms and bedrooms used to be essential pieces of luggage on long journeys. The trunks were made to last, built to withstand the inevitable knocks and bumps that occur during loading and unloading and whilst in transit.
Because it was often the richer class people who were able to afford the cost of travel, many trunks were beautifully adorned with detailed carving or engravings. Some were covered with rich leather finishes or were painted, sometimes by a noted artist.
Finding an antique trunk for sale, such as Jenny Lind trunks or dome top trunks, will enable you to decorate a room in your house with a valuable piece of history as well as a means of gaining more storage space. A lot of old style trunks come with rich stories and it would be fascinating to find out the details about those who owned the trunk before you.
